Silica Gel Blue — questions & answers
Blue silica gel is impregnated with a cobalt chloride indicator. When dry it is deep blue; as it adsorbs moisture and approaches roughly 8% saturation, the indicator gradually shifts to pink. The colour change is a visual cue that the desiccant is spent and should be regenerated or replaced.
Because blue silica gel contains cobalt chloride, it is generally not recommended for direct food or pharmaceutical contact. For those sensitive sectors we recommend cobalt-free Silica Gel Orange or non-indicating Silica Gel White. Blue silica gel is best suited to industrial, electrical and instrumentation uses.
Heat the saturated gel at 110–120°C for 2–3 hours until it returns fully to blue. Allow it to cool in a sealed, airtight container so it does not re-adsorb ambient moisture before use.
It is widely used in transformer breathers, electrical panels, electronics packaging, optical and aerospace equipment, seed and flower preservation, and any application where a visible moisture indicator adds an extra layer of quality control.
