
Almost every new bag, bottle or box comes with a small sachet stamped "SILICA GEL — DO NOT EAT". The warning makes people assume the contents are poisonous. In reality, plain silica gel is one of the safest desiccants there is. This article explains what silica gel actually is, why it carries a warning, and what to do if a child or pet swallows a packet.
What is silica gel made of?
Silica gel is a highly porous form of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) — chemically the same family of material as sand and quartz. It works by physically adsorbing water vapour into its network of tiny pores. It is chemically inert, odourless and does not react with the products it protects, which is exactly why it's used in food, pharmaceuticals and electronics.
So is plain silica gel toxic?
Plain, non-indicating white silica gel is considered non-toxic. It is not digested and passes through the body without being absorbed. The "do not eat" label is there mainly as a choking hazard warning and general precaution — not because the material itself is a poison. The main real risk is mild irritation or, for the sachet, choking in small children.
When silica gel is NOT food-safe
There is one important exception. Traditional blue silica gel is treated with cobalt chloride as a moisture indicator, which is why it should be kept away from food and medicines. For anything near consumables, cobalt-free options are used instead:
- White (non-indicating) silica gel — no additives, ideal for food and pharma.
- Orange silica gel — a cobalt-free indicator, safe for pharma and diagnostics.

What to do if someone swallows silica gel
- A bead or two of plain silica gel: generally harmless. Have a drink of water. Monitor for any choking.
- A whole packet, or a young child/pet: the choking risk matters more than the material — check the airway and seek medical advice.
- Indicating (blue/cobalt) gel: keep the packet and contact a doctor or poison helpline for guidance.
